Shap Abbey & Keld Chapel

This is a short leg stretch from the door that is accessible for the whole family. You can either walk the road straight from the junction across the road to the Shap Abbey or if you don’t mind going over some fields, you can cut across to the hamlet of Keld and walk back that way.

Rosgill Round

This is a lovely walk of 4.6 mi/ 7.5km over the fields to the hamlet of Rosgill and back via a part of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast path and goes past Shap Abbey on the way back. Perfect for a little longer walk or for a quick little training run.

Wet Sleddale and Uncle Monty’s Cottage

This is a longer walk or run of about 8.5 mi / 14 km from the door that takes you across two sets of stepping stones and past Wet Sleddale reservoir and Sleddale Hall that’s famous from the cult film Withnail & I . Just a warning, the clue is in the name – it definitely gets wet underfoot!

Three Rings of Shap

These are three circular walks or runs of 18-24 mi / 29-39 km that start and finish in Shap. Ring one takes you past Wet Sleddale to Mosedale and towards the hills above Haweswater reservoir and back via Swindale waterfalls and hamlets of Rosgill and Keld. Ring two goes through the hamlets of Reagill, Morland, Hackthorpe and Bampton Grange offering views of rivers Lyvenett, Leith and Lowther. Ring 3 will take you via the Wainwright’s Coast to Coast path to limestone pavements of National Nature Reserve of Great Asby Scar and back via Crosby Ravensworth and Oddendale.
