Lowther Castle and Gardens

Lowther Castle and Gardens are about a 10-minute drive from our door and is a great option for the whole family. It is home to dramatic castle ruins, gardens within gardens, stunning views and an adventure playground that we think might just be the best in the country.

There is also the option to make a day out of it by exploring the walks around the castle and the neighbouring village of Askham. There’s a cafe in the castle or an excellent garden cafe at Askham Hall. More info here https://lowthercastle.org/

Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre

Located near Lowther, just 10 minutes from our door, Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre hosts a collection of hawks, vultures, eagles and owls around the world. During your visit you can see the birds displayed in the garden and they also have daily flying displays. There is also a tearoom on site for refreshments.

Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream Farm

Who doesn’t love a good ice cream during their holiday?! The Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream is definitely the best you can get in the area. Located just off the A6 between Shap and Penrith, it’s a must-go spot during your exploration. It has indoor and outdoor seating as well as play area for children.

Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens

Dalemain is sometimes called the most beautiful stately homes in the North West and is situated near Ullswater. You can have a walk around the manor house and it’s gardens and have an afternoon tea in their tea room that serves famously delicious scones made to a secret recipe.

Rheged

It’s a discovery centre with cinema, cafe, shops and exhibitions as well as playgrounds on the A66 just outside Penrith. It’s a perfect stop for a rainy day or just a great place to find local treats and local produce.
