New Ing Lodge

In our many seasons of welcoming people walking Coast to Coast, we have learned that many of them have the same questions regarding the options and facilities we offer. We have collected them here, so hopefully you can find answers to most of your questions and feel much more equipped for you trek through the gorgeous countryside.

What is the earliest check in?

The earliest check in time is 3.30pm. We are often out enjoying the surroundings during our quick break, so it is likely we won’t be in the house if you arrive before 3:30pm. Check out is by 10.30am

How far away are we from the route?
We are directly on the Coast to Coast and Westmorland Way route, within the village of Shap. If you are coming from the west having started your Coast to Coast walk from St Bees, we’ll be the first guesthouse you see when you come into the village, so why walk any further!

Is breakfast included?
Yes, if you have booked a B&B room. If you are in the dorm or camping, breakfast is also available and you can order it on arrival (subject to availability).

What is the earliest time we can have breakfast?
We usually start serving breakfast from 7 am in the morning until 8.30 am. We cannot seat everyone in one sitting, which is why we have set times for breakfast. Please let us know on arrival when you’d prefer to have your breakfast.

Do you provide pack lunches?
Yes, these need to be ordered upon arrival. Our packed lunches have a sandwich, juice carton, chocolate bar, fruit and home-made biscuits in them. Packed lunches must be ordered the night before and cost £7.50 per lunch.

What options do we have for sandwiches?
We do tuna, cheese, and egg sandwiches usually. You can ask a member of staff on arrival for the exact options available on the day.

Do we serve dinner?
No, but there are options for meals in the village. See the options here: Places to Eat .

Do you have a bar?
Yes, we do. Our residents’ bar Staggering Wanderer has usually a local pilsner and a couple of ales on draft as well as a selection of other drinks.  Last orders are usually called around 8 pm.

Do you have a drying room?
No, but we do have a boiler room and most wet kit comes out dry the following morning.

Can you do laundry?
Yes, we do a wash and a dry service for £7.50

Is bedding included in the dorm?
Yes, bedding and towels are included in the dorm price.

How far is it from Patterdale to Shap?
It’s 16 miles and some might say it is one of the hardest days on the Coast to Coast route but it’s also a beautiful and rewarding day. There is a guidebook out there that claims that it takes you 6.5 hours but we would say it’s a bit too optimistic. On average, it usually takes people 9 hours to get to Shap.

How far is it from Shap to Kirkby Stephen?
It is 21 miles, but in our opinion it is definitely an easier day than the one from Patterdale to Shap. Trust us, we have tried both legs of the walk! It should take you around 8 hours to get to Kirkby Stephens.
